How to Store, Freeze, or Make Ahead

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • The meat mixture can be frozen for up to 3 months in freezer-safe containers. When you’re ready, thaw it in the fridge and warm it up on the stove or microwave.
  • The Texas Toast should be baked right before serving. It does not save well.

Cook’s Note

  • Instead of the Texas Toast, you can serve this loose beef mixture on a toasted burger bun, as they do at the Maid-Rite restaurant.
  • Use a different flavor of Texas Toast – Pepperidge Farm has 5 Cheese and Monterey Jack flavors.
  • The sandwich is typically served with pickles (either dill or bread and butter), ketchup, and mustard (like a burger!)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices of Texas toast
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting)
  • Optional toppings: pickles, shredded cheddar cheese, mustard

Directions

  • Prepare the Meat Filling: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef. Add the chopped onion and cook until the onion is soft and translucent about 5 minutes.
  • Season the Meat: Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, mustard powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is thick.
  • Toast the Bread: While the meat is simmering, spread butter on both sides of the Texas toast slices. Toast the bread in a separate skillet over medium heat until golden brown and crisp, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Assemble the Sandwiches: Spoon the meat mixture onto the toasted Texas toast slices. Add any desired toppings, such as pickles, shredded cheddar cheese, or mustard. Top with another slice of toast to form a sandwich.
  • Serve: Enjoy the Texas Toast "Maid Rites" sandwiches warm. Serve with a side of fries or a simple salad for a complete meal.
